May 2023 Sedan sales analysis and insightsSedan sales experienced a decline both on a year-on-year (YoY) and month-on-month (MoM) basis. In May 2023, 31,540 sedans were sold, marking a 5 percent drop compared to the 33,201 units sold in May 2022. MoM sales also witnessed a decline of 1.29 percent from April 2023\'s figure of 31,953 units.

Speaking about the top 10 list, the frist place is held by none other than Maruti Suzuki Dzire. India’s best-selling sedan is commanding a remarkable 35.88 percent market share in May 2023 with sales of 11,315 units. There is a growth of 11% in the sales of Dzire when compared to the previous month.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire retained its position as the best-selling sedan, despite a YoY de-growth. With sales of 11,315 units in May 2023, it witnessed a 2.48 percent decline from the previous year. However, MoM sales improved by 11.68 percent from 10,132 units, showcasing the model\'s resilience.

On the second spot is the Hyundai Aura with 4,707 units sold, reflecting a substantial YoY growth of 41.16 percent. Although MoM sales dipped by 7.43 percent, the Aura remained a strong contender in the sedan segment. We can understand the fact that there is a huge gap between the highest selling sedan and second most selling sedan in India.

After Aura, the third spot is held by Hyundai Verna with 3,687 units. Verna showcased impressive YoY growth of 147.78 percent but faced a slight MoM decline of 7.85 percent. Fourth and Fifth spot is taken by Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor with 3,128 and 2,701 units sold in May 2023. Both these compact sedan registered negative MoM growth.

Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus are holding 6 th and 7 th spot with 1,695 and 1,631 units respectively while the Honda City, which was once the highest selling C-segment sedan in India, is struggling for number with 1,532 units sold in May 2023 and occupying 8 th position. Another Maruti Suzuki Sedan which goes by name, Ciaz managed to find only 992 home and is on the 9 th spot. Finally, on the 10 th spot is Toyota Camry hybrid with just 142 sales and a massive 125.4 growth MoM.

It is not unknown that people prefer SUVs over sedans in India because of two main reasons which are already mentioned in this blog – Road presence and ground clearance. Maruti Suzuki Dzire managed to keep its sales momentum of over 10,000 units on a monthly basis only on the robust base of Maruti brand. Apart from it, rest all the sedans are struggling to even stand against it. However, Hyundai Aura, Hyundai Verna, Honda Amaze and Tata Tigor are crunching out decent numbers but things don’t look great for them. Let’s wait and look out for June 2023 sales of sedans in India.
